AJ & PA McBride Ltd. is a proud, sixth-generation family-owned company known for being one of the largest wool producers in Australia. Operating 11 agricultural properties across South Australia and Victoria, the company produces over 8500 bales of wool annually, while working toward an aspirational goal of 10,000.
About the property:
Straddling the SA/Victoria border, Telopea Downs was purchase by McBride in 2018, and at the time of sale, was the state’s largest single farm purchase. As an aggregation of 11 properties, the 47,677-ha mixed operation consists of:
- Over 40,000 ewes mated annually - 30,000 self-replacing wool flock and 10,000 dual purpose flock for fat lamb production.
- 180 cow registered Angus stud.
- 500 cow commercial herd.
- 4000 ha cropping for fodder production and pasture renovation
Shearing 2024 saw the team process 98,500 sheep, producing just under 2200 bales of wool.
Position Overview:
Due to retirement, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled and motivated Manager – Livestock Operations to join our team at Telopea Downs. This position plays a key role in the efficient and successful running of the livestock operation, working closely with the on-site General Manager to implement best farming practices, manage livestock operations, and oversee day-to-day activities.
While your passion and experience in livestock management is essential, this role also places a strong emphasis on people management. You will be responsible for leading and mentoring a team of approximately 12 staff members, ensuring effective guidance and support in their roles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Working closely with the General Manager to develop and implement strategic goals.
- Oversee the day-to-day management of farm operations, including livestock and pasture management.
- Ensure accurate record keeping of all farm activities and livestock numbers, using tools such as Agriwebb and station diary.
- Ensure farm infrastructure, including fencing, water systems, and machinery, are maintained to the highest standards.
- Supervise and allocate staff workloads, ensuring timely completion of tasks and optimal performance.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and training to staff, ensuring a high-performing and motivated team.
- Ensure a strong focus on Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) by supporting regular inspections, training, and adherence to WHS procedures.
Who we’re looking for:
The ideal candidate will have:
- Extensive livestock farming experience and proven success in an operational management role.
- A solid understanding of farm operations, including livestock and pasture management, machinery maintenance, and record-keeping.
- Demonstrated experience using Agriwebb or similar farm management tools (desirable).
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team to meet operational objectives.
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), with the ability to collaborate with contractors, staff, and management.
- Strong time management skills, able to meet deadlines and effectively prioritise tasks.
- A current motor vehicle license (car) is essential; additional licenses (e.g. motorbike, truck) are desirable.
- Knowledge of Workplace Health & Safety standards (desirable).
- A trusted team of working dogs will be highly regarded.
